Data centers, the nerve centers of the digital world, generate heat from servers and chips, necessitating cooling systems. Water cooling, for instance, can reduce data center energy use by approximately 10% compared to air cooling. While the aggregate water consumption of data centers is small, it's crucial to protect local water resources. Google recognizes this and is focusing on minimizing its local impacts, ensuring its growth doesn't come at the expense of the communities it calls home.

Five Commitments, One Vision

Google has outlined five key commitments to achieve this goal:

  4. Transparent Reporting: Google was the first major cloud provider to disclose its annual water use for data center locations, ensuring transparency for the communities where it invests and builds.

  5. Pursue Alternative Solutions: The company is exploring alternative and reclaimed solutions to protect water resources, such as using reclaimed wastewater for cooling at its data center campus in Douglas County, Georgia.

Expanding the Horizon

Google has announced $17 million in support of new projects in seven states, focusing on enhancing wetlands, converting farmland, expanding green infrastructure, and restoring floodplain forests. These initiatives aim to improve water quality, reduce fertilizer use, and provide critical habitats.

The Water Replenishment RFI

To further its replenishment goals, Google is evaluating over 700 projects submitted through its Water Replenishment Projects RFI. These projects include engineered solutions, farm-level practices, and nature-based solutions aimed at improving water efficiency, supply, and quality.
